Newcastle recently announced the signing of Jonjo Shelvey for a fee believed to be in the region of £12 million.
The former Liverpool midfielder will be keen to get first team football in a bid to re-earn his England spot for the Euros.
Surprising fee, but a top midfielder on his day
The fee may come as a surprise for a few but on his day he’s a top class midfielder and is definitely better than what they’ve got, he’s mobile, good with both feet, can shoot and is not one to hide away in a game.
Something given Newcastle’s current relegation battle and need for victories, is essential.
Puzzling sale
One thing that puzzles me is the Swans agreeing to sell him to a relegation rival. I know when a new manager comes in he can prefer a different type of player and are known to have their “favorites”, but this player was arguably their most creative central midfielder and given their need for victories it just doesn’t add up.
He has been almost ever-present with the Swans throughout the season and one of their better players in a disappointing campaign all-round despite their fine start to the season.
You’d think selling him to Newcastle would be the last thing on their mind. The only thing that makes sense is the fee involved, but will that fee matter if Shelvey performances keep Newcastle up?
Overall, a very fine signing for the struggling Magpies
On the whole I believe Shelvey will add good energy, creativity and goals to a very poor Newcastle team. They have signed the one thing they needed, a good central midfielder, as their best player in that position was former Sunderland man Jack Colback.
You can’t help, but feel this could come back to haunt Swansea especially if they get relegated and Newcastle stay up.
