Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea’s proposed move to Real Madrid looks set to drag on as the clubs remain at odds over the financial details of the deal. With pre-season just around the corner, the former Atletico Madrid man was not expecting to have to report back for duty after previously saying his goodbye to staff at the club’s Carrington training ground.

Spanish newspapers are reporting the transfer as inevitable but reports in Manchester have suggested that there is still a chance that he could remain at the English club. If the move does go ahead, De Gea will become the most expensive shot-stopper in La Liga history with a fee of €35-40m expected.

This would smash the previous record of €16m that his old club paid to Benfica last summer for the services of Jan Oblak. He would become the second most expensive keeper in world football behind Gianluigi Buffon.

So, does the 24-year-old deserve such a huge price tag? As always, it’s hard to tell just by looking at the stats; for example, a tally of 11 clean sheets in the 2014/15 season does not look that impressive when compared to the 23 achieved by Claudio Bravo at Barcelona or the 21 recorded by Manuel Neuer at Bayern Munich.

However, when you consider that De Gea made 78 saves compared to the 59 made by Bravo or the 48 made by Neuer, you realise that the Manchester United player was much busier than his rivals.

Much of this could be put down the relative weakness of the Manchester United defence when compared to Bayern Munich or Barcelona, or the more attacking nature of the Premier League. However, his figures are almost identical to those of the man he is due to replace.

At Real Madrid, Iker Casillas kept 12 clean sheets and made 77 saves, his save per goal ratio was 2.20 compared to 2.17 for the Man United player, and their goals conceded and distribution stats were virtually identical

The conclusion that can be drawn from this is that De Gea is currently performing at the same level as a world class keeper who is clearly experiencing a decline in performance at the age of 34.

However, he has yet to reach the level of some of his contemporaries who are currently playing at their peak. Given his age, and with a high quality defence in front of him, it seems reasonable to suggest that De Gea can only get better.

From that point of view, the move is a sensible one for the team from Madrid, and if he does progress to the level expected and remains at the club for many years, then the price tag will certainly be justified.

Mario Mandzukic: What can the Croatian star offer Juventus?

Juventus completed the signing of experienced Croatian forward Mario Mandzukic last month from Atletico Madrid.

The striker signed a four-year contract with the club, according to most reports - Juve agreed to pay Atletico a fee of worth around €18m.

This looks like a brilliant coup for last year’s Champions League finalists. Mario has scored a bundle of goals for Atletico and particularly Bayern Munich in recent years. In today’s market, the Italian champions have captured him fairly cheaply.

Let’s take a closer look at the 29 year-old attacker.

Background

Mandzukic first made a name for himself in his home country Croatia, playing for Dinamo Zagreb. At the capital he managed to net 42 times in 81 appearances.

With that record he earnt a move to a top league in Europe, Wolfsburg brought him to the Bundesliga for approximately €7m. A mixed couple of years followed at the Volkswagen Arena - the Croat scored 20 goals. At that time, he was aplauded more for his team play and dyanmism over his finishing.

German giants Bayern Munich saw something they liked in the 6ft 1 centre forward, they acquired him for approximetely €13 million. It turned out to be a fantastic move for both club and player - Mario excelled at Bayern.

He helped them lift the Bundesliga title twice and win the Champions League as part of their memorable treble in 2013. Adding the German and UEFA Super Cups, as well as the FIFA World Club Cup. He netted 48 times in just 88 appearances for the Bavarians.

With Pep Guardiola replacing manager Jupp Heynckes at the end of that fantastic season, the Spanish coach did not consider Mario in his plans. Hardly surprising with Pep’s tika taka style unsuited to big target men. Therefore, Mandzukic was allowed to be sold to La Liga holders (at the time) Atletico Madrid for around €22 million.

After a solitary season in Spain with the Rojiblancos, Mario bagging 20 goals and helped the side to Champions League qualification. A good return considering in the last few months he suffered with minor injuries.

Interstingly, it is the third time in four years Mandzukic has joined a side straight after they lost the Champions League final, following his 2012 move to Bayern and last summer’s switch to Atletico.

The forward is now seeking to challenge himself in the Italian league.

What can he offer Juventus?

With Carlos Tevez moving back home to Boca Juniors, many fans and pundits believe that Mandzukic was his replacement. In a way they are correct, but he isn’t a direct replacement.

Like Tevez, Mandzukic will bring non-stop running and an incredible work ethic to Juventus, but the two men are very different players.

The Argentinian is a much more creative player, he will come back to collect the ball and make something happen - dribble through a number of player or play brilliant passes into the running midfielders or his strike partner.

Manager Massimiliano Allegri commented on this last month;

“We don’t have to replace him (Tevez). What we have to do is sign players and study the way they play. Mandzukic is on his way and we have Simone Zaza, Kingsley Coman, Alvaro Morata and Paulo Dybala, young players with a lot of quality.”

The Croatian will rely on those around him to give him opportunities to put the ball in the back of the net - displaying his clinical finishing ability. For Juve fans, they hope someone like recently signed forward Paulo Dybala can do just that.

I beleive Juventus will have to slightly change the way they have been playing, they need to make sure there will be plenty of service provided to Mandzukic, particularly from wide positions, because he his lethal in the air. In the 2012/13 season with Bayern Munich, Mario scored 7 headed goals!

Mandzukic a dynamic talent and his hold-up play is a tremendous foil for surging players. There is no doubt that his awesome work rate will also help compensate for the void left by Carlos Tevez.

Akinjide Idowu: The Nigerian Human Shield under the watchful eyes of Celtic and Udinese

Akinjide Idowu is definitely not the most popular from the present crop of the Nigeria U20’s, but the young lad has been tipped for great things. The 18-year old defensive midfielder is seen as a future leader in the Super Eagles, and most European clubs agree as they have been circling him for quite a while.

Quick Facts:

Name: Akinjide Idowu

Age: 18

Position: Defensive Midfield

Club: Nigeria Youth Soccer Academy

Akinjide Idowu is yet to play for a professional club, but has featured for Nigeria at the U17 and U20 levels. He was the anchor man in midfield as Nigeria won the 2013 FIFA U17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates, and also played a key role as Nigeria got to the second round of the 2015 FIFA U20 World Cup.

He is seen to possess the marking ability which the Nigerian national teams have lacked in recent years.

Key Strengths

Nigeria U20 coach, Manu Garba once said Akinjide Idowu can ‘mark the devil out of a game’. That, of course, may have been a figurative expression, but it is a testament of Idowu’s marking ability. Though not the tallest at 1.71m, Idowu also boasts the ability to win possession easily in the air. He has often been referred to as the ‘human shield’ by teammates, and can also play in a variety of positions.

He has sometimes filled in at right-back and central defense, which shows he is not a ‘one trade’ man.

Stats

Idowu has featured in over 50 games for both the Nigeria U17 and U20 teams respectively. He played all 6 matches for the Nigeria U17 as they finished second at the 2013 CAF U17 championship in Morocco. Though not a prolific goalscorer, but Idowu had his fair share of goals, during the qualifying campaign for the U17 championship, scoring two goals.

Interested Clubs

Idowu has tested with Norwegian club, Sogndal, and almost signed with Czech club, Sparta Prague just before the 2015 Africa Youth Championship. It remains unclear the club he will sign with eventually, but Italian club, Udinese and Scottish champions, Celtic are monitoring the 18-year old. The midfielder has also reportedly held talks with Spanish club, Almeria.

I’m very happy with I’m doing at the moment but I know I still have to keep improving. I need to improve in my ball distribution and passes but I know I have made significant progress. When I sign with a club, I will improve in these areas and will become the player I know I can be. I will be one of the best midfielders around, I’m sure of that,” he told sl10.ng in April 2015.
