Transfer Madness: The Top 10 Most Interesting Moves in Europe this Summer

This window has been a mad one in terms of major and surprising transfers, particularly from clubs like Manchester United, Liverpool and Inter Milan. Which have been the most interesting moves made so far? Here’s a Top 10 list from our very own Chris Paraskevas.

Arturo Vidal (Juventus to Bayern Munich)

One of the world’s finest footballers and purest box-to-box midfielders, Arturo Vidal’s signature has cost Bayern Munich around €40 million.

Bayern manager Pep Guardiola is into his third season at the club and is desperate to win the Champions League, having failed in his last two attempts. The acquisition of Vidal is a statement of intent.

Whilst Vidal will suit the former Barcelona boss’ high pressing, high energy style, the player’s unique brand of aggression and unpredictability should give Bayern a more flexibility.

However, he also joins a team boasting an embarrassment of riches in central midfield and there are questions about how the Chile international will be deployed.

There is also the matter of Vidal’s form, with suggestions that his last season in Turin – where he helped Juventus into the Champions League final – was not his best.

Are Bayern signing a player slightly on the decline, or at the peak of his football powers?

Geoffrey Kondogbia (Monaco to Inter Milan)

In the wake of his match-winning performance against Arsenal in the Champions League last season, Kondogbia was hot property and many expected the Monaco midfielder to join the Gunners during the transfer window.

The 22 year-old then seemed set for AC Milan, before performing a stunning about-turn and signing for their fierce rivals Inter.

“Yes, the truth is that I spoke to Milan, but never in my life have I said yes to [AC] Milan CEO Adriano Galliani,” Kondogbia said of the move.

Kondogbia has also explained that Roberto Mancini was key in convincing him to move to Inter, who have snatched one of Europe’s most exciting talents from under the nose of some big clubs as they look to return to the summit of Italian football.

Roberto Firmino (Hoffenheim to Liverpool)

The Brazil international is arguably Brendan Rodgers’ biggest signing of the close season, moving from Hoffenheim for £29 million.

Given the wealth of midfield and attacking options now available at Liverpool, a place need to be found that best suits Firmino’s unique talents.

The Brazilian isn’t an out-and-out striker, preferring instead to play in-behind the forwards and assume the role of creator rather than finisher. Firmino isn’t a prolific goal-scorer but at his best is a handful for defenders with his movement and running: a stylistic trait he shares with former Liverpool star Luis Suarez.

It would be unfair to expect the former Figueirense player to have the same immediate impact that Suarez did, but Rodgers is under pressure at Anfield this season and will be desperate for his new signings to fire.

Mario Mandzukic (Atletico Madrid to Juventus)

Croatia international Mandzukic is joining a third club in three years, having spent two years at Bayern Munich and last season at Atletico Madrid.

His goal-scoring record is exemplary at club level and the 29 year-old moves to Turin on a three-year deal, replacing the departed Carlos Tevez.

Can Mandzukic replicate the form that brought him two league and cup doubles and a Champions League winners’ medal at Bayern Munich? He was certainly less effective at Atletico Madrid and expectations will be high at Juventus, who will want to mount another European challenge.

What makes this a curious move is Juventus’ markedly different playing style: Mandzukic was a success at Bayern with mobile forwards running off him, a luxury he might not be afforded so readily in Italy.

Iker Casillas (Real Madrid to Porto)

Iker Casillas’ acrimonious departure from Real Madrid gives this move a particularly interesting edge.

Despite winning three Champions League titles in his 25 years in Madrid, his relationship with the club deteriorated in recent seasons as the goalkeeper’s form dipped and he fell out with former manager Jose Mourinho and Real president Florentino Perez.

His new employers, Porto, could well be drawn alongside Real in the UEFA Champions League this season. If so, it would set the stage for an emotional and highly charged meeting.

Can Casillas get the last laugh and enjoy a revival in Portugal following a disastrous World Cup with Spain?

Adel Taraabt (QPR to Benfica)

The 26 year-old Taraabt has ended his seven-year sojourn in English football, moving to Portuguese giants Benfica on a free transfer.

At Queens Park Rangers, he produced some irrepressible performances but also had his attitude and fitness questioned by former managers Neil Warnock and Harry Redknapp.

It will be fascinating to see whether Taraabt’s talents are better developed at Benfica: the Lisbon club will be playing in the UEFA Champions League, and compete in a domestic competition that should the fleet-footed winger’s physique and style.

“It is a huge opportunity for me,” Taraabt said after making the move. “When my agent told me Benfica were interested, I immediately said: ‘Yes, I’m ready to go.”

Steven N’Zonzi (Stoke City to Sevilla)

Steve N’Zonzi might not be one of the most recognisable names in European football, but anyone who watched his performances for Stoke in the Premier League last season will be familiar his unique talents.

A midfielder capable of turning matches with individual moments of quality, it remains to be seen whether he can adapt to life in La Liga. Having also played for Blackburn Rovers, his physicality allowed him to thrive in England but Spain offers a completely different challenge.

“I need to test myself in the Champions League and unfortunately I can’t do that with Stoke,” N’Zonzi said of the move. “For me it was the right decision.”

The Europa League winners have signed Stoke’s Player of the Year for a mere £7 million.

Nani (Manchester United to Fenerbahce)

Another winger who enjoyed a long stay in England, Nani’s hugely successful Manchester United career brought him four English Premier League titles, a League Cup and a Champions League winners’ medal.

Scoring a number of wonderful goals and dazzling fans with his creativity and footwork, his importance had nonetheless diminished by the end of his time at Old Trafford: Nani was loaned to former club Sporting Lisbon last season and has now been moved on.

Turkey provides an exotic location for the continuation of his career and he is joined at his new club by former United teammate Robin van Persie.

Abou Diaby (Arsenal to Marseille)

Spending almost a decade under Arsene Wenger at Arsenal, France international Abou Diaby never fulfilled his full potential in London.

His Arsenal career was marred by regular injury setbacks that stunted his development and saw the midfielder make just two appearances in two years before he was released by the club.

Rejecting approaches from both West Brom and Liverpool, the talented but fragile 29 year-old opted instead for a move to Marseille.

“What motivated my choice was knowing which club would help me best medically,” Diaby said. “That was really my priority. I did have other offers. I had very, very good contacts with West Brom.”

With ambitions to return to the France set-up, Diaby will receive plenty of support under progressive Chilean manager Marcelo Bielsa.

Radamel Falcao (Monaco to Chelsea)

At his peak, Radamel Falcao was arguably the best striker in the world, terrorizing defenders on all continents and winning the Europa League with both Porto and Atletico Madrid.

In Spain the forward was a revelation, before a move to cashed-up French club Monaco saw his career stutter considerably: an injury in early 2014 saw him miss the World Cup in Brazil that year and the player has been a shadow of himself since.

Even a loan move to Manchester United last season couldn’t bring the best out of the Colombian, who struggled with the pace of the game in England. Nonetheless, he has been thrown a lifeline by Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, who will be hoping to wring a few goals out of the 29 year-old this season.

If Falcao manages to boost his fitness and confidence, it could prove to be a shrewd piece of business by the Portuguese manager.

Pierre Aubameyang: The Liverpool and Arsenal-linked forward extends his stay at Dortmund

The Gabonian striker Pierre Emerick Aubameyang has pledged his future to ️Borussia Dortmund by signing a new deal, which will see him stay at the Signal Iduna Park until 2020.

Aubameyang was his team’s top scorer last season and has proved on several occasions that he is well suited to play at the number 9 position rather than the wings.

Stepping up to the plate

With last summer’s new signings Ciro Immobile and Adrian Ramos failing to live up to expectations it was up to Aubameyang to step up and take the charge up front.

He was the most consistent player last season, bagging 25 goals in all competitions, at a time where ️BVB were struggling to maintain any sort of good form.

He also formed a deadly partnership with star-man Marco Reus, which was also vital in the team’s ascension up the table in the second half of the season.

Linked with moves abroad

Known for his pace, acrobatics and ‘Marvin-comic’ type of goal celebrations the 26 year old has been linked with a move to Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal during the summer. But he has silenced all the speculation by agreeing to a new contract on Friday.

With Immobile’s departure on loan to Spanish club Sevilla, Aubameyang’s role will only become more prominent under new manager Thomas Tuchel.

He also has shown in Dortmund’s friendlies that he still has got his finishing touch and is ready for another season with the Black and Yellows.

Deal extension

This deal makes Aubameyang the fourth player who has agreed to extend his contract at ️Borussia Dortmund in 2015 after teammates Marco Reus, Neven Subotic and Ilkay Gündogan.

The German side also managed to hold on to key players like Mats Hummels and seem to have learnt their lesson from the previous departures of main players like Robert Lewandowski and Mario Götze, which left them in an awkward transitional state.

The Batman stays at Borussia!

Mario Götze: Is the struggling Bayern star looking for a new beginning?

After making the shock move from ️Borussia Dortmund to Bayern Munich for £37m, the 23 year old Germany international has been struggling to replicate his old, prodigious self.

The young exciting player, who had all eyes pierced at him from on-lookers and observers, failed to live up to that expectation at his new home. And recent rumors have linked him with moves to Juventus and Arsenal.

Struggles at Bayern

After scoring the whole important winner in the final of the 2014 World Cup against Argentina, few have thought that Götze’s season would turn out as bad as it did. He managed to score 15 goals in 48 appearances for Bayern Munich in all competitions last season, but the numbers don’t tell the whole story. Even though it may not seem a bad figure for an attacking midfielder, his form in the big games was below par.

He was also benched by his manager Pep Guardiola, even when players like Arjen Robben and Frank Ribery were injured. The most notable of such instances was him watching from the sidelines when his team bowed out of the Champions League at the hands of Barcelona. This raised the question of whether he was a part of Guardiola’s future plans for the squad.

Not only that, but he also came under a lot of criticism by the media and the fans because of his poor performances.

The signing of Douglas Costa

Another factor that poses a threat to Götze’s future at Bayern is the acquisition of Douglas Costa from Shaktar Dontesk. The versatile player is considered to be a long term replacement for the aging and injury prone Frank Ribery and it seems that the Brazilian is the most likely of the two to get the nod in the starting line up.

So the news of Götze being linked with different clubs doesn’t come as a surprise as he might be open for a fresh start. Juventus, who have lost their star man Arturo Vidal to Bayern, are leading the race to secure the service of the youngster.

Other than that he is also gaining interest from the English Premier League, with Arsenal being the most likely destination despite having many options in that position.

Thomas Muller: Is the German star on his way out of Bayern Munich?

Bayern Munich and Germany international star has been heavily linked with a move away from the Allianz Arena. Will he join former teammate Bastian Schweinsteiger in leaving the German champions for newer pastures?

It has been the top transfer news in recent weeks, Manchester United have launched an enormous €100m to lure Thomas Müller away from the Allianz Arena. The 25 year old who is an integral part of Pep Guardiola’s side is reportedly a main target of his former manager, Louis van Gaal.

Having already acquired Bastian Schweinsteiger from Bayern Munich, the Dutch manager is also eyeing Müller to solve his team’s problems upfront.

Bayern Munich’s chief executive, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has ruled out any possibility of the striker leaving in a statement this week. Losing a long serving and fan favorite in Schweinsteiger wasn’t easy and it seems unlikely that Müller will be allowed to leave as well.

Thomas Müller has a good relationship with Van Gaal and the hefty fee the English club is reportedly offering might lure him away from his hometown club.

Is he an ideal target for Man United pursue?

Müller will be a key player at Manchester United if the deal goes through and can form a deadly partnership with the likes of Rooney, Mata and new signing Memphis Depay.

Müller has already won everything there is to win with Bayern Munich with the Bundesliga, DFB POKAL and the Champions League in his large collection of trophies along with the World Cup. The prospect of moving to United presents him with a new set of challenges and opportunities.

He consistently has been at his best for club and country, but still remains one of the underrated players in world football. However, Van Gaal rates him highly and the amount of money he is reportedly willing to offer Bayern asserts that. But at the moment, this transfer looks nothing more than just a rumor.

Kostas Stafylidis: Greece’s gifted full-back coming off a difficult spell at Fulham

Name: Kostas Stafylidis

Position: Left back

Age: 21

Country: Greece

Club: Bayer Leverkusen

Technically gifted and attack-minded, Kostas Stafylidis is the latest in a long line of exciting full backs produced by Greece (Giourkas Seitaridis, Takis Fyssas and Vasilis Torosidis are his predecessors).

A series of eye-catching performances at major tournaments for Greece’s national youth teams, as well as the manner in which he quickly settled at Super League club PAOK as a teenager, meant his future in football would quickly see him depart the Mediterranean.

Indeed, Bayer Leverkusen came knocking in 2012, after his stellar performances as Greece reached the final of the U-19 European Championships. Stafylidis signed a 5-year contract and a transfer fee of €1.5 million was agreed.

The Bundesliga outfit represented a significant step up from the Greek domestic scene and after returning to PAOK on loan as part of the transfer deal (for the 2012/13 season) Stafylidis then attempted to break into the Leverkusen first team.

Unable to do so, the German club decided to loan Stafylidis to Fulham, where he amassed plenty of game time in the Championship without ever finding the form or consistency to secure himself a permanent move. Flashes of inspiration were too often followed by lapses in concentration as the Londoners failed to make their return to the English Premier League.

Stafylidis now returns to Leverkusen, who recently tweeted a message of support for their young Greek starlet, perhaps in response to what was becoming an increasingly difficult sojourn in England.

Indeed, the noises coming from the club suggest Stafylidis will be afforded the chance to establish himself in the first-team this season and it could be prove a key campaign in the blossoming career of the Greece international.

The 21 year-old has all of the attributes to develop into a first-class defender: anticipation, excellent delivery from open play and set-pieces and an ability to balance attacking and defensive duties.

Whether he can stay disciplined and determined enough at one of Germany’s biggest clubs remains to be seen.

Arturo Vidal: Bayern’s man to replace Schweini may pose more questions than answers

Bayern Munich’s chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummennigge wasn’t at the launch of his club’s new kit to hear the jeers from a number of supporters, but he did say he expected it. I don’t know if they were booing Bayern Munich or just the transfer itself” he told Bild, referring to the exit of Bastian Schweinsteiger to Manchester United.

The midfielder who had won everything with Bayern over 13 years and the friendly face who drank in the local pub and played with friends in the park, Schweini as he is endearingly known to Bayern loyalists, was suddenly leaving Bavaria, where he holds a saint-like status, behind.

Rummennigge, who himself served the German giants for a decade, would have empathised with Bayern’s supporters and would have braced himself for the reaction. He would be aware Schweinsteiger would have been extremely difficult to replace, if not for his expertise on the pitch but for the admiration and worship he received off it.

Juventus’ 28 year old Arturo Vidal may have been identified as the on-field replacement however, in a move that at first glance is most unlike Pep Guardiola. Analyse it to more detail however and it takes on greater levels of curiosity.

Anathema to the graceful ball-movers that the Spaniard usually prefers, Vidal will bring with him tenacity and the raw aggression that earned him 49 bookings in his four years in Italy. Guardiola may be directing Bayern to a shift in style, but with the 44 year old entering the last year of his contract at the Allianz Arena those fond of a conspiracy theory may query if it is Bayern preparing for life without the coach.

If Guardiola is to bow out at the end of his three year deal his time will be unfulfilled if he fails, at the third attempt, to secure the Champions League that Jupp Heynckes discovered couldn’t prevent him from being shuffled aside to make way for the Catalan.

The box of league supremacy has been ticked emphatically, but humbling defeats to Spanish opposition on the continent has left a sour taste in the mouths of the hierarchy who may have even handed Guardiola a show of strength by sanctioning the sale of Schweinsteiger. The politics may be uncertain, but this coming season is undoubtedly pivotal for Guardiola.

The €30 million signing of Brazilian attacking midfielder Douglas Costa from Shakhtar Donetsk suggests he is looking for an injection of pace and he would also get that in abundance from Vidal who operated as the legs for Andrea Pirlo at Juventus.

With Schweinsteiger the one to be offloaded from glut of Bayern midfielders who all appear so similar; Phillip Lahm, Thiago Alcantara, Javi Martinez and Xabi Alonso, Vidal will offer much-needed bite and steel. Guardiola may envisage the Chilean, supported by Alcantara, doing the same dogged shielding job he did for Pirlo at Juve with Alonso.

Given his senior Chile debut by the revolutionary Marcelo Bielsa and a vital cog in the exciting teams of the 2010 and 2014 World Cups, the latter under Jorge Sampaoli which eliminated Spain and nearly did for Brazil, Vidal’s education in the persistent pressing game will appeal to Guardiola who coached it so effectively at Barcelona.

He attempted the most tackles (134) at Juventus last season and won the ball back through challenges and interceptions at a rate of 4.7 per game, stats that will be alluring to Bayern’s studious coach.

Vidal also won this year’s Copa America under Sampaoli’s tutelage, earning himself a place in the team of the tournament, a consolation prize for the failure to secure a Champions League for Juventus under Massimiliano Allegri whose focus on relentless hard-work secured a league and cup double.

It was Vidal’s fourth successive league title in Italy and a £28 million move, with Juve looking to recoup funds after renovating their squad with Paulo Dybala, Mario Mandzukic, Simone Zaza and Roberto Pereyra in a spree which has exceeded £60 million, will see him join a side who enjoy a similar level of domestic dominance. It will be on the continent that will provide the true test of his pedigree and mettle.

It will not always be pretty; Vidal is a persistent fouler and will too often walk the tightrope between the yellow and a second red card, but perhaps for once the idealist in Guardiola isn’t searching for aesthetics.

He will be asking Vidal to prowl fiercely around his midfield to allow his possession-artists to operate, and to drive an irrepressible will to win, the same kind that got Carlos Zambrano of Peru sent-off in the Copa America semi-final. With Vidal in it, Bayern won’t have the same team that bowed with a whimper to both Real Madrid and Barcelona over the course of the past two seasons.

For a reasonable fee in this current market, Vidal will provide a satisfactory replacement for Schweinsteiger and is three years the German’s junior. Though regardless of how much of a fighter he is on the field or how much he work he ploughs through in his midfield station, replacing Schweinsteiger’s Bavarian void will be way beyond him.
