There are some players who go about their jobs week in week out and never suffer from loss of form. They can seemingly reproduce last season’s efforts this time around in the blink of an eye, and their consistency eventually becomes something we’re barely even aware of. There are others, however, who undergo gut-wrenching periods in which they turn into mere shadows of their former selves.
When a striker suddenly begins to miss a few opportunities, his confidence can soon start to disappear. The great Ian Wright always said he never worried about the last chance he had, he was only ever concerned about the next one, but not every forward has the same outlook.
Since his high stakes, high fee, high profile move from Liverpool to Chelsea, Fernando Torres has looked out of sorts and out of luck, but that’s all starting to change now.
The Spaniard finished the 2011-12 season finally among the goals after a 24-match barren run that had some observers wondering if the switch to London had been a dreadful mistake. He had looked bereft of confidence and almost scared to make the runs that would get him back on track. His first touch, so assured in the past, looked ragged and unconvincing, much to the delight of his detractors.
However, great players don’t suddenly become poor players overnight, and everyone in the game knew that once Torres found his shooting boots all would be well again.
A hat-trick against Queens Park Rangers and a memorable solo goal against Barcelona in the semi-final of the Champions League helped him to finish off the season with a smile on his face and a spring in his step.

Euro 2012 is currently being held in Poland and Ukraine, and Fernando has been among the goals already.
The next season’s domestic campaign will see him plying his trade for Chelsea once again and I think he will be among the front runners for the Golden Boot award. Now that his confidence and swagger has returned, he could be a good bet for the league’s top scorer in 2012-13.
