According to the Daily Express, Chelsea are battling with Spanish giants Barcelona over the services of Juventus wing-back Stephan Lichtsteiner.

As reported by the paper’s James Cambridge:

“Barca are in desperate need of a quality right-back and are yet to replace Dani Alves who joined Juventus on a free transfer over the summer.

The Catalan side have been forced to use winger Aleix Vidal and defensive midfielder Sergi Roberto in the meantime.

However, Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport claim Barca boss Luis Enrique is plotting a January move for Juve’s Lichtsteiner.

The 32-year-old is no longer a first-team regular at the Juventus Stadium and has made just six appearances this term.

He is out of contract in June and Gazzetta claim he is unlikely to be handed a new deal by the Turin-based club.

The report says he could end up at the Nou Camp instead, either in January or on a free transfer in the summer.

It is said Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is still keeping tabs on the Switzerland international.

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is said to be keeping tabs on Juventus star Stephan Lichtsteiner

Conte has no recognised right wing-backs in his squad, meaning he has been forced to use Victor Moses who has so far impressed.”

Suitable target?

With Moses in-form and Chelsea lacking a decent back-up in the right-back role, especially with Ivanovic out of form for sometime now, the Swiss international may not be a bad signing to seek.

Lichtsteiner is no longer a regular at Juventus and with his contract set to expire, the wing-back won’t cost much and will very likely be made available for a move during the January transfer window.
