Atletico Madrid are plotting their summer business, and an unlikely name has emerged.

According to a report from The Independent, Diego Simeone – who looks likely to remain in charge – has identified Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy as a target.

Sources close to the Independent say that Simeone was impressed with the Englishman’s play during their Champions League quarter-final with the Foxes.

He is said to believe that his industry and guile would complement the style of play he looks to implement.

A striker is a priority this summer, as speculation surrounding Antoine Griezmann grows, and Simeone has also singled out Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez.

Verdict

This is one of the more surprising transfer stories, but, it makes a fair bit of sense.

Vardy is a work-horse, but does have an element of class and clinical edge about his play. Vardy might be available for less than he was last summer, with his stock having dropped, too.

Obviously, Alexis Sanchez’s quality would complement any team.

A Vardy – Sanchez partnership would be an intriguing prospect: the world class moments from the Chilean balancing well with Vardy’s immense tenacity.
