Newcastle hit rock bottom when they were relegated from the Premier League.
With the club having no option but to offload its star players, for them to gain playing time in top flight football English clubs like Liverpool and Tottenham have reportedly shown interest in their playmaker Georginio Wijnaldum.
Wijnaldum is reportedly set to leave the fresh Championship side Newcastle United as he is gaining a lot of attention from other big clubs.
According to Daily Mail, Spurs lead the race for the Dutchman’s signature, but Newcastle have put a hefty price tag of £25 million for the Dutch international.
Stay or be sold for a hefty fee
Newcastle will look to keep hold of the player as they wouldn’t want to lose out on him, keeping in mind that the club recently sold Andros Townsend to Crystal Palace.
Even if Newcastle offload the 25 year old, Rafael Benitez will make sure that the club gets a profit by selling him, who was bought from PSV Eindhoven last summer for £14 million.
Georginio scored 11 goals in 38 games, most notably two of those coming against Spurs in a 5-1 victory which grabbed the attention of many outfits like AS Roma and Everton.
Tottenham will look to bolster their striking options as Wijnaldum is a key player up front and is widely known for his ability to control the ball well.
Vital addition
Even though he went 16 games without a goal for Newcastle towards the end of the season, he can still be a vital addition to any side.
Liverpool are also said to be interested in him but this deal looks difficult to go through as they already have ample of players in the area where Wijnaldum is usually preferred.
Tottenham should secure the signature of Vincent Janssen in the coming days as Spurs are already in talks with the AZ Alkmaar striker.
The deal is coming close to completion which may result in Mauricio Pochettino’s interest to decrease for Wijnaldum.
Having won the league with PSV during his Eredivise days, playing in the Championship is a huge step back for the player.
Due to the relegation, Wijnaldum as well as teammate Moussa Sissoko have asked to let go of them.
Sissoko recently said: “Newcastle’s relegation is sad, I’ll have to think about my future after the Euros.”
Talented, but with a heavy price tag
Having won the Dutch Footballer of the Year for 2014-15, Georginio has achieved a lot in his football career so far.
He has made more than 300 appearances at club level and has managed to score 92 goals in total.
With strong ability to play through balls and with an eye for goal as a set piece threat, Wijnaldum would be joy to watch as he’ll team up with Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen in midfield if the deal is to go through.
The main question, however remains if Tottenham should pay £25 million for him and if the player would be able to live up to his heavy price tag.
