Tottenham’s defence has been the focus of much attention in the last few weeks after the decision to sell Kieran Trippier and attempts to sell fellow full-back, Danny Rose. Tottenham have been a club in turmoil since appearing in the Champion’s League final against Liverpool and seeing many of their best players become unsettled by the interest of other clubs.
The defense of the Premier League club has been one of the most up and down aspects of the North London club with Davidson Sanchez being forced to play as an emergency right-back in early games.
The latest unsettled player that could be the latest to depart from Tottenham’s defence could be Jan Vertonghen who has been rumored to be interesting clubs in the Bundesliga after appearing to fall out with manager Mauricio Pachettino.
In recent days, the Belgian defender has shocked many fans with his admission he is no longer discussing a new contract with the English Premier League top four entrant. Vertonghen has been key to the success of Tottenham Hotspur in the last few years, particularly when Toby Alderwierald was struggling to gain a regular spot in the team following his own transfer speculation.
Unhappiness is moving through the Tottenham camp to start a season when many experts thought the addition of new players in the summer transfer window. With Liverpool and Manchester City seemingly on their own as the two leaders in the English Premier League title race, the third spot is up for grabs and Spurs usual slow start to the season is giving rivals the chance to steal a march on them in the race to remain in the Champion’s League spots for the coming season.
If Tottenham Hotspur is to remain a big club in the Premier League and in Europe they are in need of retaining their best players for the future. If the club loses Christian Eriksen in January for a fee or for free in the Summer, the chances of further players leaving will grow. Vertonghen is a popular figure who has been the mainstay of Tottenham’s defence for a number of seasons and would be a huge loss and expensive to replace if he were to leave the club.
One of the few positives to come out of the season after four games are the emergence of Harry Winks as a true deep-lying midfield playmaker. The Tottenham Pirlo has become one of the best passers of the ball in the English Premier League with his 283 passes the most by a midfielder in the league this season so far.
The emergence of Winks has been a key part of the points Spurs have already picked up this season with many fans believing he should have started the last England international fixture ahead of West Ham’s less than impressive Declan Rice.
