Anthony Ujah is building quite a reputation for himself at Werder Bremen following his summer move after an eye-catching run of six goals in seven matches.
The Nigerian international reached double figures for Köln last season and was a key reason why the newly promoted club managed to survive.
A summer transfer to supposedly bigger and better things at Werder Bremen materialised but while Ujah has not disappointed, Bremen have failed to push on and Ujah could once again end up involved in a relegation fight.
Werder are just one point outside the bottom three right now and have only won four times so far this season. With Köln six points and five places better off, the striker might be wondering whether he has really bettered himself by making the switch.
Clinical eye for a goal
One thing that can’t be disputed is his eye for a goal. Ujah has netted nine times in 17 starts so far this season in all competitions and right now is one of the hottest strikers in German football.
His most impressive showing came in his return to former club Mainz where he scored twice to guide Werder Bremen to a 3-1 win. Just four days later he haunted his most recent employers by scoring the only goal to knock Köln out of the German Cup.
Goals against Borussia Dortmund, Hamburg and Stuttgart have followed and at 25, Ujah is heading towards his peak years and if he can continue banging in the goals he will surely cement himself as a regular in the Nigeria squad.
Can Werder keep him beyond this season?
Unless Werder Bremen can make improvements in the second half of the season, they might already be faced with a battle to hold onto their striker. They signed him for €4.5million in the summer which is already looking like a bargain and given his current form, his value may well have already rocketed to double that figure.
Only five players have scored more goals than Ujah in the Bundesliga this season and four of them play for either Bayern Munich or Borussia Dortmund so have much better service to rely upon.
The striker has been one of the few bright sparks at Weserstadion this season and given they are leaking goals at the back, Werder will be relying on Ujah to continue his rich vein of form as they look to move clear of danger.
