Barcelona have entered the race to sign Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld, reports the Daily Mail.
Ernesto Valverde has set his sights on the Belgian after having a spat of injuries to his defence this year and is seeking to bolster his back-line. Alderweireld has been a long-term target for the Red Devils, with their interest piquing over reports of a snag in negotiations over a new deal between the Belgian and Spurs.
He is contracted until 2020, but with just two seasons remaining on his contract, both Barca and United believe he can be lured away with the right price.
The Verdict
United need defenders, good ones at that.
Phil Jones and Chris Smalling always threaten to submerge into calamity and are not good enough to play at Old Trafford; Jose Mourinho is set to be seeking a long-term partner for Eric Bailly after having been unsure about Victor Lindelof’s start to life at Manchester.
The Belgian would complement Barca’s emphasis on playing it out from the back as he is blessed with astute technical ability, a graduate of the infamous Ajax academy.
With two European heavyweight vying for his signature Spurs will have a tough job of persuading him to stay.
