Why Aguero is Guardiola’s key man against Liverpool

On Tuesday night, Manchester City once again face off against Liverpool and they are going to require a miracle in order to overturn the first leg deficit.

Pep Guardiola’s side need to score four, without response, to have any hope of reaching the semi finals stage.

The Citizens host the Reds after two straight defeats for the first time this season. The only shining light out of a dark tunnel in frustrating match this weekend against Manchester United was the return of Sergio Agüero. The Argentine came on for Ilkay Gündogan with 15 minutes left of the derby and almost flipped the fixture on its head.

Recovered Aguero will be at disposal after he missed the first match at Anfield. This will be a huge boost for Guardiola as it was obvious that Gabriel Jesus could not answer the task at Anfield. In that match, Jesus lacked presence on his own up front and didn’t seem like he was working particularly hard.

Sergio Aguero is the most natural goal-scorer in the Manchester City squad and could have a huge part to play on Tuesday night. Also, Aguero is regularly on the score sheet when they play against Liverpool as he has scored six times against them. Liverpool conceded five times in the corresponding league fixture at Etihad this season and the Argentine international got the opening goal on that day.

Man City have lost two straight games (Liverpool & Man Utd) in one week but don’t be deceived because they can upturn the 3-0 deficit against Liverpool. After all, Barcelona did it last season against PSG. In football anything can happen especially if Pep is your Manager.

It is important that the home side take an early lead and they will be looking at their main striker to deliver that. I can think of nobody better suited to this occasion than Sergio because he has scored big goals when the team most needed them.
