Why Football is NOT popular in America

According to FIFA’s latest research, there are more than 262 million people around the world, actively playing football on a day to day basis. It will be hard to find at least one continent or even the country where football has never been played. However, America tends to avoid following the on-going trend, changing the way we consume sports culture.

Why is Football not popular in the United States? Unfortunately, there’s no single answer to that question. However, we’re surely dealing with some sort of cultural difference, that creates the barrier, stopping the majority of Americans from joining the rapidly growing sports tribe.

After spending hours of time on researching the niche, finding all the possible reasons why American population roots for other sports activities, rather than playing the so-called universal religion, I’ve decided to craft this article, answering the biggest misconception of the 21st century.

Here are some of the reasons, actually, thoughts of mine, why Football isn’t yet widely supported in the U.S:

Defense wins the game

Simply, Americans aren’t in love with games, which may last for hours sometimes even without scoring a single point during the period of an entire match. On the other hand, the majority of sports fans in the United States, don’t find the process of watching numerous players running after the ball with close to zero entertaining elements.

That’s the main argument of the young who pursue their dreams in basketball, tennis, and baseball along with having the most attention of the spectators.

Americans aren’t the best

We all should agree on the fact that everyone in the United States is obsessed with being number one in every aspect of the game. Surely, there’s nothing wrong with having a desire to compete against everyone. Probably, that’s the reason why the country as a whole successfully managed to become an economic superpower, revolutionizing most of the industries.

Without a doubt, you will not be able to name a country, having a better team in American football. Beside the fact of naming the game that is only played on one continent, most of the leading players of the league and champions too, are from the U.S. Not mentioning the basketball world, that has been entirely dominated by African-American citizens.

But what about football? United States national team has barely managed to be qualified for the World Cup. Additionally, having close to zero chance of competing against the biggest European football teams, crosses the Americans out of the list of competing clubs.

Key takeaways:

No one loves losing, PERIOD.

They cannot stand draws - ties

As we’ve already mentioned earlier, watching a 2-hour-long game, ending with a tie could be the biggest disappointment of the spectator. Actually, that’s the real issue of football as a whole, because the fanbase supports the club during the period of the entire match and having no winner at the end of the game doesn’t meet our expectations.

Of course, not all draws are that terrible to watch. However, according to the statistics, close to 9% of the total games ended 0-0 from the year of 2017 to 2018. Can you even imagine that? It does seem fishy enough not to trust the numbers, but eventually its the real truth that we have to deal with.

The lack of using hands

Have you ever wondered why the Americans created their own ‘Football’? Cause they enjoy playing sports with hands. Beside the fact of goalkeeper having the ability to use hands, still, the United States citizens do face a shortage of activity.

Substitution could be the real problem

In football, teams are not allowed to do more than three substitutions per match, which slows the game down a bit and makes it drab to watch. Additionally, it allows the majority of players to act selfish and pretend to have some sort of magical physical condition to last for an hour or two without taking a single minute rest.

Actually, all the players successfully manage to reach the final minutes of the game, but in case having the right opportunity of scoring, they flop and later on lie on the grass for few minutes to regain the so-called stamina alongside with spending precious time, intended for competitor team.

Will Football ever become the leading sport in the United States of America?

We do believe in miracles, jokes aside.

From time to time, the popularity of football tends to be growing among young players in the country. Nevertheless, it will take a number of years to get to a level, we’ll be satisfied with. I don’t think we’ll be getting any Football stars from the USA anytime soon.
