Why Tottenham finally made a good, worthwhile use of a transfer window

With the Premier League kick off less than 24 hours away from its starting point and the summer transfer window now closed for those clubs, fans up and down the country will today be surveying over social media and the papers how their team will look come kick off.

Almost £1.5 billion pounds changed hands before Thursday’s deadline and only Chelsea were unable to add to their squad due to their imposed transfer ban. On the other side of London to the north, both Arsenal and Tottenham took full advantage and strengthened their playing staff, the latter finally making good use of a transfer window.

Spurs fans used to be spoiled by Harry Redknapp’s wheeling and dealing on deadline day, the norm being Harry hanging out of a car window leaving the training ground at some point during the day handing out the update. Signings for the Lilywhite’s have been in short supply, but this time around Daniel Levy made moves both at the beginning of the window and right at the very end.

Granted they didn’t achieve to snare all their targets, Paulo Dybala will be seen as the one that got away, how close they actually were is unsure despite Juventus agreeing to sell the player, reports suggesting a deal on image rights being the stumbling block. That signing would have been the icing on the cake and some quarters a real statement to the rest of the top six, but Levy’s dealings have been spot on this window and Mauricio Pochettino will be happy with the players he has at his disposal for the months ahead.

The Argentine had identified his targets and in Tanguy Ndombele, Jack Clarke, Ryan Sessegnon and Giovani lo Celso Levy has backed his boss and delivered in this window. A lack of squad depth did nearly cost Spurs a Champions League spot last season and there will still be concerns that no experienced back up striker to Harry Kane is evident in the squad, although many will point to Lucas Moura or Heung-Min Son being more than adequate replacements for the England captain.

While Clarke and Sessegnon are signings with one eye on the future, Ndombele and lo Celso will be expected to provide big contributions from this weekend and certainly strengthen what is already a strong midfield area with the likes of Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko.

Of course there is a chance players could still leave for the continent with foreign windows still open for another 2-3 weeks and speculation around Christian Eriksen and Danny Rose will persist until those windows are firmly shut.

Wanting to build upon last season fourth placed finish and a Champions League final spot, Pochettino has much more at his disposal but are possibly still one major signing away from a title challenge, but now firmly ensconced at the new White Hart Lane Spurs will need to make their home stadium a fortress and ensure this window pushes Tottenham onwards towards winning a first Premiership title.
