According to a report published the Metro, Nacho Monreal is purportedly on the cusp of closing the curtains on his Arsenal career. The 33 year old is reportedly slated for move to back to La Liga through the gates of Basque outfit Real Sociedad.
The Spaniard will reportedly sign the dotted line on a two-year contract with the option of a third season with La Liga side. If the move materializes, then Arsenal will be only left with two available options at left-back: Saed Kolasinac and the currently sidelined Kieran Tierney.
Verdict?
In hindsight, Arsenal’s mooted intent on offloading Nacho Monreal makes sense. Monreal is 33, he’s not getting any younger, and clearly has had his best years behind him. But with Tierney sidelined until October and Kolasinac mired in a security-jeopardizing dilemma with Mesut Ozil, who else will ably fill that vacant left-back position?
Yes, Monreal, alongside David Luiz, got turned inside out by Mohamed Salah on Saturday at Anfield. But as he proved in Arsenal’s first two league games, Monreal still got some gas and know-how left in the tank. Arsenal’s season is going to be long one as always, and they’ll need the deepest squad possible to get them by in the hopes and aspirations of racking up a coveted top-four, Champions League-qualifying spot. Monreal’s experience and versatility could turn out invaluable to Arsenal’s top four quest.
This move is destined for next summer, not now and not even in January.
