Mohamed Salah netted a brace as Liverpool registered a 3-0 win over Stoke City in a midweek Premier League encounter.
The Egyptian came off the bench after the interval to add onto Sadio Mane’s strike in the first half, ensuring the Reds secured all three points on a windy, Wednesday night in Stoke.
Although Liverpool are fifth on the table with 26 points- two points behind fourth placed Arsenal and fourteen adrift of leader Manchester City- Salah’s purple patch could help spark Liverpool’s relevance in the race for the Premier League title.
Top scorer
Liverpool have thus far gotten value for the £36.9m paid to AS Roma for the services of the striker in the summer.
The 25-year has overtaken the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Sergio Aguero and last season’s golden boot winner Harry Kane to top the charts with 12 goals after 14 Premier League appearances.
It’s debatable whether the striker will go all the way to clinch the golden boot, but Liverpool will without question call upon his goalscoring exploits in their quest for both domestic and European glory.
Suarez comparison
Mohamed Salah’s recent rise to prominence has attracted comparison with former Liverpool forward Luis Suarez- who currently plies his trade with Spanish powerhouse Barcelona.
During his stay at Anfield, the Uruguayan international scored 13 goals after 21 games in all competitions, ending the 2012/13 season with 30 goals.
Such comparison can only add to the commonly held wisdom that Salah is by all accounts one of the best strikers in the current Premier League campaign.
Can’t do it all alone
It happened with Suarez at his peak at Liverpool and the trend once again showed its grim face with Philippe Coutinho last season.
Mohamed Salah may be on a fine goalscoring patch, but it would be a travesty for the success of a team to be centered on the individual brilliance of a single player.
Sadio Mane, Philippe Coutinho and the ilk should equally rise up to the mark to accelerate Liverpool’s pursuit of silverware this season.
