Tottenham: Why Spurs are out of the title picture

Tottenham Hotspur endured the agony of a third consecutive Premier League match without a win after being outclassed by Leicester City in a midweek encounter.

Jamie Vardy set the King Power alight with a cheeky lob in the thirteenth minute- in what was his 100th goal in the League- before Riyad Mahrez doubled the advantage right at the stroke of half time.

Even though Harry Kane struck the leather past Kasper Schmeichel in the tail end of the encounter, the goal was not was not enough to rally a comeback.

Winless run

The 2-0 defeat in the North London derby without question undermined their local bragging rights, but it was the 1-1 draw against West Brom and the subsequent defeat to the Foxes that has massively dented their title challenge.

The defeat to Leicester was their fourth of the season, but Mauricio Pochettino won’t have time to rue their missed chances as Spurs are set to face a stern challenge during the festive season- key among them being visits to Watford, Manchester City and Burnley.

Widening gap

Salvaging a single point out of a possible nine has seen Spurs drop to seventh on the log; a point behind dark horses Burnley and two behind fifth placed Liverpool.

The sudden, inexplicable decline by Tottenham has them eight points behind Manchester United, and a whooping sixteen behind title favorites Manchester City.

Given that Spurs still have to visit the Etihad in December, the gap may soon widen into fissures.

Champions League focus

Tottenham received plaudits for qualifying into the last-16 of the Champions League with two games to spare, following historic wins over Borussia Dortmund and holders Real Madrid.

Nonetheless, the rich vein of form in Europe is, seemingly if not assuredly, taking a toll on Spurs in the domestic League.

Hitting two birds with one stone may seem a thought too far for the North Londoners, sufficient reason as to why Spurs should switch their attention to the Cup competitions to avoid another trophyless season.

As it stands, Tottenham are potentially out of the title challenge.
