Jose Mourinho is set for a ruthless overhaul of his defence this summer and will look to offload both Phil Jones and Chris Smalling.
According to the Daily Mirror, Mourinho is seeking a new centre-half and will put Smalling up for sale; while Jones’ position is not quite so fatal, he is still in a precarious position and it is reported that his exit would not be too much of a concern for the Manchester United manager.
The pair had a torrid time against Newcastle on the weekend, but Mourinho is said to have been reticent about their future prior to the fixture.
The Verdict
Liverpool have splashed 75 million on Virgil van Dijk, Manchester City 57 million on Laporte, Tottenham 50 million on Sanchez in the summer, all the while United – despite serious spending since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure – are still left with a pairing that warrants no place among the echelons of the Premier League.
The reasons are nuance and, damningly, myriad, but Smalling and Jones are not good enough. Mourinho is absolutely right to want to offload them and look for alternatives.
